Designer Spotlight - Barde van Voltt

Casa Mezcal, Mexico City
Casa Mezcal, Mexico City

In mind I originally had a blog that was consumer oriented, focusing on DIY techniques and general design theory. But this afternoon I was reviewing last years INT Interior Design Awards (2025 submissions have just closed for judging) and I couldn't NOT share this beautiful work of Amsterdam-based studio Barde van Voltt.

Casa Mezcal is a reclaimed former mezcal tasting facility that weaves in the architectural heritage, surrounding natural environment, and quality craftsmanship that this cultural conservation project deserves. I particularly love that Mexican artisans create the furniture, art, and accessories for the home, proving that local, sustainable sourcing provides the same, if not better, elegance that massive storefronts.

Sliding glass walls and skylights bring in copious natural light, and the outdoors are lushly landscaped. The house is honest to its architecture, highlighting arches, earthen bricks, and terracotta that will age with the home, as if it has always been a character in the Mexican landscape.

In fact, playing into light, greenery, and locally produced products seems to be a consistent theme with Barde van Voltt. I'm in love with the functional, curated, and local design, and I'll be sure to check their other projects for more inspiration.
